About this tool

Reverse of the letter grade tools. Enter a percentage and pick the grading scale your university uses, and the converter returns the letter grade, the grade point behind it and the qualitative description, covering both the common ten point O to F scale and the IGNOU A to E qualitative scale.

How it works

Using the Percentage to Grade Letter Converter in three steps

Every step below reflects the actual calculation this tool runs, so you can check the result by hand if you need to.

  1. 1

Choose the grading scale your university uses, either the ten point O to F scale or the IGNOU five point scale.

  2. 2

Enter the percentage you scored in the course.

  3. 3

The tool returns the letter grade for that band together with its grade point and qualitative description.

Grade band mapping

10 point: O >= 90, E >= 80, A >= 70, B >= 60, C >= 50, D >= 40, F below 40 | IGNOU: A >= 80, B >= 60, C >= 50, D >= 40
  • The ten point bands follow the UGC choice based credit system recommendation used by MAKAUT, AKTU and SPPU.
  • IGNOU uses a five point qualitative scale where A stands for excellent and E for unsatisfactory.
  • Individual programmes can shift a band by a few marks, so confirm with your ordinance.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ten point band the same at every university?

The O to F structure is common across UGC credit system universities, but the exact cut offs can move a few marks between ordinances, so check your grading table.

Why does IGNOU use only five letters?

IGNOU reports a qualitative grade from A for excellent down to E for unsatisfactory rather than a ten point letter scale, so its bands are wider.

Does a letter grade decide my division?

No. Division is decided by the overall percentage or CGPA, while the letter grade describes a single course result.

Which scale should I choose for MAKAUT, AKTU or SPPU?

All three follow the ten point letter scale, so pick that option. IGNOU is the exception with its five point qualitative grades.

Do the bands change between programmes?

Cut offs can shift by a few marks in specific ordinances, so treat the result as the standard mapping and confirm against your grading table.
