About this tool
MAKAUT weights the later years of a four year degree more heavily when computing the degree grade point average. This calculator applies the weighting of one for the first two years and one and a half for the final two, then converts the DGPA into a percentage.
How it works
Using the DGPA 4-Year Calculator in three steps
Every step below reflects the actual calculation this tool runs, so you can check the result by hand if you need to.
- 1
Enter the yearly grade point average for each of the four years.
- 2
The weighted formula adds year one and year two at full weight and years three and four at 1.5 weight.
- 3
The total is divided by five to give the final DGPA used for your degree classification.
Weighted degree grade point average
DGPA = (Y1 + Y2 + 1.5 x Y3 + 1.5 x Y4) / 5- Each Y value is the yearly grade point average for that academic year.
- The divisor of five is the sum of the four weights.
- The percentage shown uses the official (DGPA - 0.75) x 10 conversion.
Frequently asked questions
Why do the final two years carry more weight?
The later years cover specialisation subjects, so the ordinance gives them one and a half times the weight of the foundation years.
What if my programme is three years long?
This formula is specific to four year programmes. A three year programme uses its own weighting stated in the relevant regulation.
Why are the later years weighted more?
MAKAUT weights the third and fourth years at 1.5 because the specialisation courses in those years carry more importance in the degree.
What about a lateral entry student?
Lateral entry students start from the second year, so use the yearly averages that actually appear on your grade sheets and follow the weightage printed there.
