About this tool

Visvesvaraya Technological University follows a credit based choice system where every subject carries credits and a letter grade from S down to F. This calculator multiplies each subject grade point by its credits, divides by the registered credits of the semester to give the SGPA, and folds in your earlier credits to keep a running CGPA. It also shows the percentage equivalent so you can quote the same result on placement forms.

How it works

Using the VTU SGPA & CGPA Calculator in three steps

Every step below reflects the actual calculation this tool runs, so you can check the result by hand if you need to.

  1. 1

Add one row per subject with the credits and the letter grade printed on your VTU result.

  2. 2

The tool multiplies each grade point by the credits, adds them up and divides by the registered credits to give the SGPA.

  3. 3

Enter your previous CGPA and the credits behind it, and the running CGPA plus the percentage equivalent appear alongside.

VTU credit weighted SGPA

SGPA = Sum of (Credits x Grade Point) / Sum of Credits
  • VTU grade points run S=10, A=9, B=8, C=7, D=6, E=4 and F=0.
  • An F grade contributes zero points but the credits still count in the denominator, which pulls the SGPA down.
  • CGPA is the credit weighted average of every semester, not the plain average of the SGPA values.

Frequently asked questions

Does a failed subject stay in the SGPA?

Yes. Until the subject is cleared, its credits sit in the denominator with zero grade points. Once you pass it in a supplementary examination the revised grade replaces the F and the SGPA is recomputed.

Are audit and mandatory courses counted?

Non credit mandatory courses such as environmental studies carry a pass or fail entry and no credits, so leave them out of the calculator.

Why is my CGPA different from the average of my SGPA values?

Semesters carry different credit loads. A twenty six credit semester influences the CGPA more than a twenty credit semester, which a plain average ignores.

How many decimals does VTU print?

VTU results show the SGPA and CGPA to two decimals, and this tool matches that precision.

Where do I find the credits for each subject?

They are printed against the subject code on the VTU marks card and in the scheme document published for your batch.

Can I use this before the results are declared?

Yes. Enter the grades you expect and the tool shows the SGPA that combination would produce, which is useful for planning a supplementary attempt.
