About this tool
Application forms often ask for a CGPA when your transcript only quotes a percentage. This converter reverses the official conversion rule of the university you pick, including the IGNOU five point polynomial which has to be solved numerically rather than by simple arithmetic, and returns the grade point value that maps back to the percentage you entered.
How it works
Using the Percentage to CGPA & SGPA Converter in three steps
Every step below reflects the actual calculation this tool runs, so you can check the result by hand if you need to.
- 1
Pick the university whose rule applies, since IGNOU, MAKAUT, AKTU and SPPU each convert differently.
- 2
Enter the percentage printed on your transcript or equivalence certificate.
- 3
The tool applies the reverse of that university formula and converts the answer forward again so you can see it matches.
Reverse conversion rules
MAKAUT and SPPU: GPA = (% / 10) + 0.75 | AKTU: CGPA = (% + 7.5) / 10 | IGNOU: numeric inverse of the 5 point polynomial- MAKAUT and SPPU both publish a 0.75 deduction rule, so the reverse adds 0.75 back.
- AKTU deducts 7.5 percentage points, so the reverse adds them before dividing by ten.
- The IGNOU five point scale is cubic, so the tool solves it by bisection instead of a closed formula.
Frequently asked questions
Is a reversed CGPA officially valid?
It is an estimate. Universities certify the marksheet value, so quote the reversed figure only where a form insists on a grade point and your document shows a percentage.
Why does IGNOU need a different method?
The IGNOU five point conversion is a cubic polynomial rather than a straight line, so there is no simple inverse. The tool searches for the CGPA whose polynomial output equals your percentage.
Can I use one formula for every university?
No. MAKAUT, SPPU and AKTU deduct different amounts, so the same percentage produces different grade points at each. Always pick your own university.
What is the maximum percentage I can enter?
For MAKAUT, AKTU and SPPU the rules cap out at 92.5 percent, because a perfect ten grade point converts to that figure. IGNOU accepts up to a hundred.
Does the tool round the grade point?
The result is shown to two decimals, which is the precision universities print on grade cards.
